Following the recent shootings, Presiding Bishop Curry encourages prayers for our Nation and our Culture. The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, laments how once more, we have witnessed how children of God have been killed in tragic ways.

“All of us as human beings were created with infinite value and dignity. Thus, the loss of any human life is a tragedy for all of us, and an injustice done to anyone -regardless of who they are- is an injustice and wrong to all of us….As people who follow Jesus, and people of good will and decency, we know that we must and can find better ways,” he declared.

Presiding Bishop Curry pledged the concerted effort of the Church to foster a national conversation on finding better ways to uphold the respect and honor of all the members of our society.

In particular, he calls members of The Episcopal Church to pray for ourselves and our loved ones, and to pray for our country and culture, using the prayer from the Book of Common Prayer entitled Prayer for the Human Family. Even as we remember those who have lost their lives, and those who are suffering deeply in spirit because of this violence, let us pray:

O God, you have made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son. Look with compassion on the whole human family. Take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts. Break down the walls that separate us. Unite us in bonds of love, and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth, that in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. --Amen.
